Match Report: Blood Bowl - Dark Elves vs Humans

We have a few traditions in my house, and one of those traditions is to play a game of Blood Bowl around the time of the Super Bowl.  Today's exhibition match is a continuation of that proud tradition.  I am glad my Skumgrod was available for this one.  Despite having the video game version, for the Super Bowl I always insist on using the miniatures.  I broke out the Winter themed board, and we randomly determined that for the game we were going to use the Black Guards Dark Elf team vs. the Nottingham Nobles Human team.

Let's get to the Blood Bowl!  I did not document every single thing that happened in the game, but tried to keep it close enough for a narrative to form.  Let's turn it over to our hosts, Lord Summervale and his co-host Mad Johan.

**                            **                            **                        **                        **                    **

Lord Summervale:  Welcome all to Bludwieser Blood Bowl Championship weekend events!  In addition to the "Big Game" Bludweiser also sponsors many exhibition matches to get your mouth watering for more Blood Bowl!  There are skills competitions, exhibition games, and star player meet-and-greets from all levels of the game, intent on celebrating the Greatest Game in the Olde World!  It is an epic celebration of Nuffle and all things Blood Bowl!

You can tune into the big game Bludweiser Blood Bowl on Cabalvision later this weekend.  However, today on Cabalvision IV we are bringing you the best action from these celebratory exhibition games.  Each Conference, Division and League at all levels of the game have sent some of their ....errrr..... best to represent themselves here.  Altdorf is flooded with players and fans alike!

Right now, we will be featuring the Deep North- Southern Division exhibition action!  Today we will be featuring the Black Guards led by their team captain Mori-Thai the Velvet Crush versus their division rivals the Nottingham Nobles led by their throwing captain Rick Priestley!

As always, I am joined in the booth by my .... err..... trusty companion and great Blood Bowl mind, Mad Johan.

Mad Johan: Thanks for getting me out of the stocks in time for the match, Summervale.  I really need to lay-off the Bugman's Brew before the show starts.  As we all know, the Notthingham Nobles are a founding member of the Deep North- Southern Division.  Some say, that the entire league is bankrolled by the Nobles just so they have some other teams to play Blood Bowl with.  I mean, Sigmar knows they aren't good enough to make it in a real division!

Lord Summervale: You know our contract expressly forbids us from talking about that Johan.  So, let me gracefully pivot!  What can we expect to see today?

Mad Johan: Probably a lot of mediocre Blood Bowl!  The Nobles only have two Blitzers on their team, a far cry from the rest of the skilled divisions where the orthodoxy of Nuffle seems to be 4 Blitzers.  That means, they are relying on their Lineman to do a lot of the work.  I guess that's what happens when you are using out-of-the-box team building in your league.

Lord Summervale: Mori-Thai seems to think that her Black Guards are a competitive match-up for the Nobles.  What do you think?

Mad Johan: I think Dark Elf teams led by a couple of Witch Elves gets more people in the stands than going up against a team of Orks.  To be honest, neither team is that good, and both seem to be hoping to level up their audience by being here.  We have seen them play, they do tend to be a rather violent team, and less finesse than one might expect from a Dark Elf team.

Lord Summervale: Well, it looks like both teams are lining up and getting ready to play.  The ref sends the commemorative coin into the air..... and it looks like the Nobles have elected to kick-off the ball to the Dark Elves.

Mad Johan: An interesting choice, as Dark Elves have a reputation for scoring early and often, not that the Black Guards can manage it.

Lord Summervale: The Nobles have their back-up Thrower, Andy Chambers in the dug-out.  He seems to be signaling plays into Rick.  Meanwhile, the Black Guard have a back-up runner, Urlieth Val-Drakken riding the bench.

Mad Johan:  Let's play BLOOD BOWL!

The Nobles in their Purple and White vs. the Black Guard in their Blues and Lizard scales

Lord Summervale: Raz-al-slam is back to receive the kick and...... Boom!  The game is underway!  A terrible kick-off that goes out-of-bounds.  The Refs toss it in to Raz-al-slam and the game gets going.

Mad Johan: Perhaps an omen for what we are about to see out there today?

Lord Summervale: The Runner moves up and the Black Guards quickly form a cage around the ball carrier.  However, they shift from the right hash to the left with a display of elvish speed.

Mad Johan: Those dirty Elves are trixie!

Lord Summervale: There is a scrum near the line of scrimmage with a lot of pushing and shoving up close.

Mad Johan: Bang!  The Black Guards are the first to lose a player there.

Lord Summervale: Looks like ... Jaq the Knife is unconscious.  The Nobles blitzers are moving in and...

Mad Johan: Boom!  Kurounous the Dreaded a Black Guard blitzer lays out the Noble's blitzer Mat Ward cold!

Lord Summervale: Mori-Thai is leading the onslaught and manages to punch an opening though the Nobles' lines.  Raz-Al-Slam makes his move and bursts past the Nobles with a fancy spin move and a burst of speed!  The Nobles' Gav Thorpe, a catcher' tries to catch-up to him but it is too little too late!

Mad Johan: Touchdown for the Black Guard!  Plus, they did not leave much time left in the half for the Nobles to score back.

Lord Summervale: Indeed Johan.  Plus, it looks like Mat Ward is going to stay off the pitch as the Nobles set-up for their chance with the ball.  Back-up Thrower Andy Chambers is out there with Rick Priestley.

Mad Johan: Hoepfully for the Nobles, Ward will be back for the second half.

Lord Summervale: The kick is up and it goes straight to Nobles' Catcher Alessio Cavatorre, who quickly hauls it in.

Mad Johan: Pretty sure that wasn't the plan!

Lord Summervale: The Nobles don't have much time left on the clock so they get to work!  Gav Thorpe tries to get into the Black Guard backfield, but is brought down by the Dark Elf Blitzer Darveck the Flayer.  However, Andy Chambers delivers a key block to Korounous the Dreaded, it gives Alessio Cavatorre enough space and he dances around the defenders and cuts back through the line.  He is sprinting deep into the Dark Elf backfield!

Mad Johan: There is no one around to stop him!

Lord Summervale: Just the clock, as the half comes to a close before he could score.  The crowd is very upset!  I guess there are plenty of Nobles fans in the audience.

Mad Johan: A tough break, but the Nobles start the second half with the ball. Both sides have shown they can get to the end zone.

Lord Summervale: With that, it is time for a break from our sponsors!  Gullotine Razors, a close shave everytime you use one.  Let's go back to the Cabalvision IV Studios for a quick update from around the league!

**                            **                        **                        **                        **                        **

Lord Summervale: Welcome back to the second half of this Bludweiser Blood Bowl Weekend exhibition match between the Dark Elf Black Guards and the Human Nottingham Nobles.  The Nobles are trailing by 1 at the half, but will receive the ball this half.

Mad Johan: If they want to get back into this game, it is now or never!

Lord Summervale: The Nobles ended the first half just shy of the goal line due to time.  Can they get there again?

Mad Johan: I am sure the Black Guard watched the crystal ball replay on that and learned a lot from it.  Don't expect it to be that easy this time for the Nobles.

Lord Summervale: Let's go down to the field and get into the action.  The Nobles set-up with their Catchers out-wide, and their throwers set to receive.  The Black Guards use their Blitzers and Witch Elves to cover the wings, and their Runner Urlieth Val-Drakken as a roving safety in the back-field.

Mad Johan: The Nobles will need to eat up as much of the clock as possible and then score to force an overtime.

Lord Summervale: The kick is up, and the touchback goes to Rick Priestly, the Thrower in the back field for the Nobles.  Right away, the Nobles start to move, with Gav Thorpe stepping through the Dark Elf line and going deep into the backfield.  His counter-part is less successful as the lead block from a returned Mat Ward only pushes the Black Guard defender and fails to open a lane.

Mad Johan: He is deep, but exposed.  Ker-runch!

Lord Summervale:  Oof!  In a blow to the Nobles plans, Korounous the Dreaded lives up to his name and flattens Gav Thorpe with Val-Drakken's aid.  Thorpe is not going to be getting up from that hit until tomorrow!

Mad Johan: Cavatoree is not doing much better, as Mori-Thai works around the edge and flattens him with a hit.  He's still in the game though!

Lord Summervale:  Gav Thorpe's sacrifice though opened up space on the far side wing, and the Nobles took advantage of it.  The formed a cage and pushed in along the edge.  The Black Guard struggled to respond, as many of their players are tied up at the line.

Mad Johan: Cavatorre managed to get up and sneak across the field and into the end zone.  He looks open, and he is waving to get Priestley's attention.

Lord Summervale: I think the Nobles star thrower sees him now!  He goes back to throw, and Val-Drakken jumps to intercept.  Priestley manages to bomb it past the Black Guard defender and it is up, up, up..... this is a long throw!

Mad Johan: TOUCHDOWN!!!!

Lord Summervale: Oh my, what a pass!  What a catch!   That puts the Nobles back in the game!

Mad Johan: They managed a quick touchdown, but I think they may have left too much time on the clock!

Lord Summervale: The two teams reset for a kick-off.  The Nobles try a corer blitz on the Near side, but it doesn't make much progress or open a lane.  Urlieth Van-Drakken picks up the ball easily.  The two sides clash at the line, and The Widow Ariethial uses her Frenzy ability to open a gap on the far side of the field.

Mad Johan: The speed of a Dark Elf was needed to get through that gap!

Lord Summervale: Indeed!  The Black Guards are hitting hard and stunning several of the Nobles' players.  That is hampering their ability to respond to the Dark Elf break through!

Mad Johan: Mori-Thai proves why they call her the Velvet Crush after absolutely dismantling the Noble's Blitzer Jervis Johnson!

Lord Summervale: With only a few minutes left on the clock, the Black Guard Runner Urlieth Can-Drakken walks untouched into the End Zone.  Touchdown Black Guards!

Mad Johan: It would take a miracle for the Nobles to win now.

Lord Summervale: Indeed!  The two teams get back for the kick-off.  It is a high kick, but goes out of the back of the end zone.  This touch back means that Rick Priestley is given the ball and the game begins again!

Mad Johan: A missed block at the line costs the Nobles dearly.  You can't make a basic mistake like that.  This is crunch time!

Lord Summervale: Priestley dumps the ball to Cavatorre, but there is no path forward and he is held at the line.  The clock winds down, and this game ends in a rather dull finish.

Lord Summervale: Johan, who do you think were the Bloodwieser MVPs of the game?

Mad Johan: Well, going back to the game notes it looks like for the Nobles it is a no-brainer. Rick is the star-thrower for a reason.  He was the one who kept them in the game.  No Rick, and the Nobles are in rough shape this game.

On the winning side of the ball, Kurounous the Dreaded was all-over the field and making his presence known, especially in the first half.  Mora-Thai was similar.  However, Urlieth Van-Drakken scored the go ahead point, so you have to consider that long running play.  I am going with Van-Drakken for the MVP this time.

Lord Summervale: Well, that looks like the ball game for us here.  I will turn you back to the Cabalvision IV tower for an update of all the exciting events going on this Blood Bowl Cup weekend!  Remember, if you need to cut it close, Guillotine Razors are a cut above!

Mad Johan: I have seen worse exhibition games.....

Lord Summervale: This is Lord Summervale and Johan signing off!

Match Report: Blood Bowl- Dark Elf vs Ork

Lord Summervale: Welcome to Freebooter Field in the Deep North- Southern Regional Conference.  Today we will be watching the opening games of the season between the Dark Elf Black Guards and the Ork Skulsmash Reeverz here on Cabalvision IV.  As always, I will be joined in the booth by my good friend and great Blood Bowl mind, Mad Johan.

Mad Johan: Thanks Lord Summervale, always good to be here.

Lord Summervale: It feels like only yesterday that the season came to a close, and a new one is all ready upon us.  Why, I haven't aged a bit!  Last year, late in the season the Black Guards sailed into the Deep North- Southern Regional Conference in order to play Blood Bowl.

Mad Johan: It was a big accomplishment as the conference is land locked!

Lord Summervale: The Black Guard had a promising opening start against the Elf Superiors.  However, the injury to their team captain Mori-Thai the Velvet Crush led to a mediocre season overall.  However, thanks to the favor of Khaine and some time spent in a Cauldron of Blood, she is back and so is her team!

They have travelled into the dark lands and here to Freebooter Field to take on their first opponent of the season, the Skulsmash Reeverz led by Grimgrod Rotgut.  The Orks have been a veteran team in the conference.  They have a decent record and a dangerous fan base.  Mad Johan, what do you think the keys to the game are going to be?

Mad Johan: The Ork game is easy.  Smash enough Elves into the turf to send most of them to the dug-out, then walk in for the score.  This is a game the Skulsmash Reeverz have done well against many other teams in the Conference.  I expect to see more of the same style.

Mori-Thai has to to be a bit more precise.  They need to use the precise application of force to create an opening, and then use their speed to capitalize on it.  That is a weakness in the Ork team.  However, it will be tough to find a weak spot to apply force at.  All these Orks are tough.

Lord Summervale: Indeed Johan.  You are a great Blood Bowl mind.  The two team captains have gone to the center of the field  for the coin toss.....

.... it looks like the Black Guards have won the toss and elected to receive.

Mad Johan: A good strategy as that ensures their best players are available for the drive, before the Orks start taking them out.

Lord Summervale: The pair of Dark Elf runners are in the back field, with Mora-Thai back there  directing her line.  The Dark Elves have gone light up front, and put their Blitzers out wide.  The Orks have their Black Orks up front, ready to try and push through early.  Blitzers are also wide for them and Rotgut in the back field as a safety.

Boom! The kick is up!

Mad Johan: The Dark Elves start to move before the ball comes down, they step away from the line and start to make a cage...... they are lucky the Ref did not call that illegal shift!

Lord Summervale: The kick is short, and Raz-al-Slam scoops it up and quickly finds himself approaching the line of scrimmage surrounded in a nice Dark Elf cage, heading to the far side.

Mad Johan:   Darveck the Flayer rushes the Near Side and blasts Ruk-ruk with a block that was just a blur of movement.  I am not sure what the Dark Elf did, but I am pretty sure an Ork is not designed to bend that way.  Ouch! One of the Ork blitzers is all ready out.

Lord Summervale: On the far side, the Ork Blitzer Gobsmack and a fellow Lineman seem to be holding up the Dark Elf progress.  However, a mis-timed block by Bowel Burna leaves a big gap in the Ork line, that Raz-Al-Slam darts through with a few blockers.

Mad Johan: You can see the Black Guards speed now as the Orks try to re-group.

Lord Summervale: The Reeverz close in, but it doesn't look like enough as they drop back.  Rotgut tries to take the runner down, but is stiff armed away.

Mad Johan: Wow, that was enough as Raz-Al-Slam darts into the end zone.

Mad Johan: That drive showed off just what the Black Guards are capable of.  They managed to force a hole in the line and easily exploited it for the score.

Lord Summervale: There is still plenty of time left on the clock, so the teams quickly gather to prepare for the kick-off.

Val-Drakken the other Black Guard runner kicks it up and it is a high deep kick.  Rotgut is back to receive along with Runthugga.  The Orks are set-up on the line similar to the opening drive.

Rotgut pulls in the ball and starts towards the line of scrimmage.  He picks up a couple of Line Orks as lead blockers.  Meanwhile, the Black Orks managed to split open a gap in the front line.  However, instead of Rotgut going through the gap, a Dark Elf Blitzer Korounous the Hunter comes barrelling up the center towards the Ork ball carrier!

Mad Johan: I doubt that was how the play was drawn up.

Lord Summervale: Rotgut's lead blockers were able to handle the threat of the Black Guard Blitzer.  Indeed the Black Orks look like they are making a path to the end zone.

Mad Johan: The clock is ticking Summervale.....

Lord Summervale: Mori-Thai herself heads into the scrum to show her team how it is done.

On the Near side, Gutrippa is taken apart in a brutal block by Jaq the Knife, sending the Ork to the dug-out.

Mad Johan: Did I see the flash of a blade there?

Lord Summervale: The ref seemed to think it was clean?

Mad Johan: Oh wow!  In the center, the Black Ork Bad Axe was just taken down by Darvek the Flayer in a blown block!  Ouch!

Lord Summervale: That closed the alley for the Skulsmash Reeverz.  As the clock winds down, play devolves into a series of pointless pushing and shoving.  The Orks have no path to the endzone, and their drive splutters out at the center line.

Mad Johan: That was NOT how the Orks wanted to perform in the first half.  They ended up with more people in the dug-out than the Dark Elves?  Unexpected.

Lord Summervale: With that, we are going to send you back to the Cabalvision IV tower for updates around the Olde World.  Here and now, the Black Guard are up 1-0 over the Skulsmash Reeverz, they will start with the ball for the second half, so they have plenty of time to tie it up.  See you back here soon, and remember that today's game is brought to you by Guillotine Razors, a cut above the rest.

****************************************************

Lord Summervale: Welcome back to the second half of the match between the Dark Elf Black Guard and the Ork Skulsmash Reeverz.  The Black Guard are up by 1, but are getting ready to kick it to the Orks. Johan, any thoughts on what the Skulsmash Reeverz need to do here?

Mad Johan: Score.

Lord Summervale: Ah...... okay then!

The Orks keep Rotgut and Runthugga back.  They stack the line, but their casualties are leaving them a bit ragged up front.  Meanwhile, the Dark Elves are playing back and away.  The Blitzers are in the wings, with the runners back.  Mori-Thai is playing back and has been able to flow to the point of the action all game so far.

With that, Val-Drakken kicks the ball up to the Orks.  Rotgut easily pulls it in and the Ork drive begins.

Mad Johan: Looking at the Ork line, I have never seen them so out-numbered!

Lord Summervale: The Black Guard line bends as the Orks surge forward.  Gobsmacka drives hard and slips behind the line for a potential pass.  However, on the far side, Mora-Thai manages to slip past the Orks and is honing in on Rotgut who has the ball.

Mad Johan: The wily Veteran manages to stiff arm the Velvet Crush away and maintains control of the ball.

Lord Summervale: Again, they look to be going up the center as Bad Axe and Big Ammer drive the tip of the wedge into the Black Guard.

As Rotgut gets to the line of Scrimmage, the Dark Elf runners move up to meet him.

Mad Johan: In the big push, things went pear shaped for the Orks.  Two more managed to go down to the dug-out thanks to precise hits, or poor footing during their blocks.  You know what I always say Summervale.....

Lord Summervale: It is hard to win a game with half your team in the dug-out!

Mad Johan: Exactly!

Reeverz Manager in Shock as ANOTHER Ork goes out!

Lord Summervale: Urleith Val-Drakken supported by the Flayer manage to level Rotgut.  The ball pops up, and somehow ends up in the hands of Raz-Al-Slam!

Mad Johan:  In front of him is an open field, with only stunned and down Orks in front of him.

Lord Summervale:  Raz-Al-Slam takes off up the field.  No one can touch him and he dashes into the end zone off the turn over.  The Black Guard are now up by two.

Mad Johan: Dark Elf teams love to put the dagger in.

Lord Summervale: Looking at the clock, I think they just did.

The two teams quickly gather back for a kick-off. The Orks in the dug-out, stay there.  I guess they are in no mood to play anymore.

Boom! Val-Drakken puts the ball up again.  Runthugga pulls it in.

Mad Johan: Looks like the Orks are content to just throw punches and try to make the Dark Elves pay.

Lord Summervale: The Black Guard are too clever to mix it up, and try to play off.  It is enough to keep the Orks from scoring, but not enough to let the Reeverz get cheap hits.

After some inconclusive stomping, pushing, shoving, and punching the ref calls the game.  The Ork fans start booing and hissing loudly as the home squad leaves the field.

Mad Johan: A bit of an ugly and slow end.

Lord Summervale: Final thoughts and MVPs for the game, Johan?

Mad Johan: The Skulsmash Reever gameplan was used against them!  The Black Guard came to play and they played tough.  Once they had the upperhand, they were merciless and pounded the ball home for the win.

For MVPs on the Reeverz side, that is a tough call.  No one really stepped up at all.  Gobsmacka tried to be a deep threat, Big Axe and Bad Ammer did a lot of hitting but ultimately let the team down, and Rotgut was in a similar position.  In the end no one executed, so I think today I might as well roll a twelve sided dice for the answer.....

.... <Rolls dice>......

Looks like Spleenrippa is the MVP this game!

Lord Summervale: Oh my.....

Mad Johan: Now, on the Black Guard side of the ball we have a few options to talk about.  Darvek the Flayer had some strong hits, forced a turn over, took on the Black Orks, and threatened the Ork drive in the first half.  Raz-Al-Slam managed to score twice so that speaks for itself.  Finally, Jaq the Knife did a great job as a lineman holding the line against some tough opponents and came out on top, even taking an Ork out of the game.  Ultimately though, Raz-Al-Slam won the game for his team, so he has got to be the MVP!

Lord Summervale: Thanks for the insights on the game.

With that, I will turn you back over to the Cabalvision IV tower for ongoing Blood Bowl action across the Olde World.  Thanks for tuning in to Cabalvision IV to see the Black Guards defeat the Skulsmash Reeverz in the Deep North- Southern Regional Conference play.

Until next time, remember Bludweiser; good to the last drop.  Good afternoon everyone.

Match Report: Blood Bowl- Lizardmen vs Orks

This year, to honor the Super Bowl my daughter and I sat down and played a game of Blood Bowl.  She prefers to play using the video game version as it does most of the work for you!  However, this time I insisted on using the miniatures I had painted up.  She relented since it was for the Super Bowl and because it had been over a year since we played with the Minis.  It had been so long, this was the first time the Lustria Revenge (Lizardmen) actually touched the pitch!  In addition, I used one of the alternate game boards, this time the "winter" themed board.

Enough prelude, let's get to the Blood Bowl action.  I did not document every part of the game, so this might be a bit different than other match reports I have written.

**                        **                            **                            **                            **

Lord Summervale: Welcome to the Bludweiser Blood Bowl championship weekend events!  In addition to the "big game", this entire Blood Bowl weekend has skills competitions, exhibition games, and star players meet-and-greets.  It is the perfect way to Praise Nuffle and celebrate the institution that is Blood Bowl.

You can tune into the big Blood Bowl Cup game tomorrow evening on CabalVision.  Today, on Cabalvision IV we will be highligthing some of the other events surrounding the Cup game.  Each conference and Division has sent some of their teams to put on a show for the fans gathering here in Altdorf for the Blood Bowl Cup game.

Right now, we will be following the action of the Deep North- Southern Division exhibition teams, the Ork Skulsmash Reeverz led by their team captain Grimgrod Rotgut versus the .... umm....... <Shuffles Papers>.... Lustria's Revenge?  Led by...... ah....... <Long Pause>

Anyway, as always I am joined in the Cabalvision IV booth with my colleague and great Blood Bowl mind, Mad Johan.

Mad Johan: As always, great to be here with you again Lord Summervale.  The Southern Conference of the Deep North League has gone through a bit of a drought as plague, famine, war, and poverty has swept the region.  This has made it a challenging season for Blood Bowl.  However, where there is a will to play, Nuffle will provide!  Today is a great example of that!

Lord Summervale: Obviously, the Skulsmash Reeverz have been one of the backbone teams of the Deep North League- Southern Conference.  We know what to expect from them....

Mad Johan: That's right.  They are not a finesse team.  They are going to bring the pain.  Their usual play style involves attrition and lot's of it.  You know what I always say Summervale.....

Lord Summervale and Mad Johan (In Unison): It is hard to win the game, when half your team is in the dug-out!

Lord Summervale: So, what do we know about this new team, the Lustria's Revenge?

Mad Johan: Never heard of them.  Probably just a bunch of stringer nobodies for the Skulsmsh Reeverz to beat up on.

Lord Summervale: Oh.... ahhh...... okay then.  Let's get to the action!  The Lustria's Revenge is a team of Lizardmen apparently.  They win the toss, and choose to kick it to the Reeverz.  The Reeverz have their Back-up thrower in reserve, while the Revenge have placed some tiny lizardman with googly eyes in reserve.  Johan, can you make out who it is?

Mad Johan: I see his number, but..... ah..... I have no idea how to pronounce that....... Let's just call him googly-eyed-little-guy-in-dugout?

Lord Summervale: Ok, but there is another one on the field.  Shouldn't we let the folks at home know who it is?

Mad Johan: That's easy.  He's Googly-eyed-little-guy-on-the-field.  Easy!

Lord Summervale: You are indeed a great Blood Bowl mind.  With that, the kick is up!  It lands in the backfield and Rotgut scoops it up and the Orks go to work.

Mad Johan: Do they ever.  The front line is working the line of scrimmage, but those big, scaly lizards are not push overs!  However, the Reeverz are using good team work.

Boom!  The first of those big scalies goes down on the near side!  I think he's...... dead?  Our sideline Grot will need to confirm.

That leaves a big hole on the Near side, and the Orks look like they intend to exploit it as Gobsmacka the Blitza leads the way.

Lord Summervale: The Revenge do not look ready to fold up yet as they re-adjust to stop the Ork advance.  Smaller lizardmen and the big-scalies try to shift over and fill the gap.

Lord Summervale: Gobsmacka lives up to his name and delivers a powerful hit to one of the smaller lizardmen.

Mad Johan: The way he went down, that did not look good.  The Reeverz fans are loving it though!

Lord Summervale:  The googly-eyed-little-guy-on-the-field and a fellow little guy get back behind and keep harassing Rotgut in the backfield.  Not enough to down him, but enough to slow his forward progress.  The ork Captain pump fakes to throw them off, but they stay with him

Mad Johan: Not for long!  A pair of Ork Lineman show up and clear the area!  Boom!  More crushing hits from the Orks.

Lord Summervale: This just in from our sideline Grot...... those last three big hits were all lethal Johan!

Mad Johan: Lethal!  Wow, the Skulsmash Reeverz are bringing the pain today!

Lord Sumervale: Indeed, the Orks have managed to grind down the clock with ball control, and Rotgut is making a last sprint to the goal line.  However, a pair of small lizard safeties spring across the field and tanlge him up before he can get.  He goes down and the ball goes loose!

Mad Johan: A tough break for the Reeverz.

Lord Summervale: With that, time expires in the first half.  We will send you back to Cabalvision IV Blood Bowl desk for updates around the league on this Bludweiser Blood Bowl Cup weekend!

Lord Summervale: Welcome back to the Bludweiser Blood Bowl Cup Weekend exhibition game for the Deep North League- Southern Conference between the Ork Skulsmash Reeverz and the Lizardmen of Lustria's Revenge.  The score is currently 0-0.

Today's game is sponsored by the Lustria Tourism Commission and the Princess Owayonna Healing Spring Bottled Water.  Remember, "If you can't drink the water, drink Princess Owayonna's!"

Mad Johan: The Skulsmash Reeverz did what they needed to do in the first half.  They grinded the Revenge down by three players!  That makes it tough for them to mount a credible offense in this half.

Lord Summervale: Indeed, and the Revenge get the ball first.

Mad Johan: Despite not scoring, the Reeverz have to feel confident going into this half.

Lord Summervale: Both teams set up for the kick, with the Revenge putting their big Scalies up front and  their smaller guys in back to receive.  However, they only have three players on the line.  It looks like the Orks are planning to flood the edges with their Blitzers as they line up in the wings.

With that, the kick goes up and the little lizards in the back quickly scamper over and scoop up the short kick.

Mad Johan: Right away that Ork chainsaw line goes to work..... just to be clear.... I mean Chainsaw metaphorically in this case..... no one has pulled out an actual chainsaw.....

Lord Summervale: Much to the fans dismay!  The Lizards form a small cage and try to break across the line on the near side, but the orks are there to stop them.

Mad Johan: The cage just melted under the Ork assault.  In fact, two of Lizards are in bad positions now by the sidelines.

Lord Summervale: Indeed, the ball carrier shifts and moves between two of the Big Scalies in the center for protection.

Mad Johan: It is a wise move as Boom!  Two more Revenge players are sent to the dug-out with sideline hits!

Lord Summervale: Googly-eyed-little-guy manages to scamper through the Ork lines, dodging the Reeverz grasping hands.  This puts him in the back field.  His team mate sees him loose, and dumps him the ball from the line.

Mad Johan: Slippery.  However, it isn't enough as Rotgut plays safety and rushes over and knocks the ball loose.

Lord Summervale: A second little lizard rushes out to try and recover the ball, but fails spectacularly!  The Revenge were a few steps short of scoring on that drive.

Mad Johan: A few steps short still loses you the game.

Lord Summervale: The Reeverz pick it up.  The Revenge line is in tough shape.  The biggest threat to the Reeverz scoring drive is now the clock.

The orks have whittled down and out positioned the Revenge so Gobsmacka easily runs to the backfield.  Rotgut moves up to the line, and sees him open.  He throws a strike that the Ork easily hauls in.

Lord Summervale: No one is around to stop him, and he dances into the end zone for the go ahead score.  There are only a few minutes left on the clock and the two teams quickly set-up for a kick-off.

Mad Johan: The revenge doesn't have much to set-up with.....

Lord Summervale: Indeed.  The kick is up, and drops into the Lizardman back field.

Mad Johan: There is some confusion on the line, and one of the few players left on the Revenge, goes down in a pile.  Ouch!

Lord Summervale: Before the Revenge can even scoop up the ball, time expires.  Another game of Blood Bowl hits the books.  Johan, what were the keys to this game and who was the MVPs?

Mad Johan: Well, the Skulsmash Reeverz executed their game plan flawlessly.  Use attrition to wear down their opponent.  They had great success, even managing to take out a few of the big fellas from the Revenge line!  Once there was no one left to oppose them, it was a cake walk in.

The MVP has to be the team Captain Grimgrod Rotgut as he moved the ball deep in the first half, played safety to stop the score, and used his arm to get the ball to the open man for the winning touch down.

On the Revenge side...... I don't know.  Maybe the googly-eyed-little-guy that managed to get deep penetration to at least threaten a touchdown?  Honestly, they lost.  Who cares about their MVP?

Lord Summervale:  There we have it folks.  The Skulsmash Reeverz defeat the Lustria's Revenge in the Bludweiser Blood Bowl Cup Weekend exhibition play for the <gasps for air> Deep North League- Southern Conference Exhibition Invitational. <Starts panting for breath>

Mads Johan: We will send you back to the Cabalvision IV study for more great Blood Bowl coverage.  Until next time!

Summervale, are you okay?  You are looking a bit paler than usual?

Random: 2020 Half-Way Goal Update!

So far 2020 has not been like anything that I expected it to be.  I expected a vast nuclear wasteland, or to be living in a giant dystopian city, I thought we would be on Tokyo-3 by now!  That is what my childhood had prepared me for?  It did not prepare me for the dystopia that we actually have!  Pandemics, riots, political chaos..... I guess it is a good thing I have wargaming to keep me going!

Last year, I tried a different approach and focused on goals by Period.  I decided not to be doing that this year.  I placed my goals into a series of categories instead of by genre or period.  Those categories are:

·         Purchase- This is goals that require me to spend my hard earned bread, cash, grip, money, coin, etc.
·         Painting and Modelling- Here is the section of stuff I will want to paint up or build up
·         Playing- This section will be for what I intend to put on the table for 2020
·         Rules Writing- Here are my goals for writing and creating games
·         Miscellany- This is for stuff that falls into the realm of Blood and Spectacles but doesn’t neatly fit into a category

I laid most of my goals out in a different thread, so there is no need to rehash that post!  If you want you can go back and read it for yourself.

So, let's find out what we have accomplished so far.....

Purchases
This year, I expected to buy a lot of stuff.  Thanks to your support via the Wargame Vault, I have been able to make progress on this front.  Not as much as I had hoped.... but progress.  Thanks for the assist on this one guys!  I have been able to get the following from my list:

1. Clash of Spears
2. Zona Alfa
3. Gangster Terrain (3 Shotgun houses and 2 store fronts)
4. Blood Bowl Lizard Men
5. Last Days: Seasons
6. Realty's Edge

There are still a lot of ancients left to buy.  However, I think I cleared some space in the painting Queue for them so I can probably start buying some Romans.

That leaves to buy:

  • Victrix Elephant
  • Victrix Greek Cavalry
  • Victrix Republican Romans
  • Victrix Samnites/Carthaginians/Italians
  • Gangs of Rome
  • Mortal Gods
  • Oathsworn Burrows and Badgers bundles A and B
  • Any new Osprey Blue Books
That still looks like a long ways to go on the buying front.  I have a feeling some will slide into next year!

Painting and Modelling
Last year, I painted over 150+ models.  That is probably a record for me, and I doubt I will be getting anywhere near that this year.  However, a man can dream can’t he? So far I have painted up 75 minis or bases.  Not bad.

I finished my two Greek Men of Bronze armies- Corinthians and Spartans

Spartan Army

Corinthian Army

Paint my 6mm Baccus Successor Armies- I have enough for two armies of Heirs to Empire!

Finish up my loose Gangster Models from Copplestone casting- I only have 5 left

Complete a set of Scorpion Drones for All Quiet on the Martian Front- Not Started

Paint my Purchases for Use- Painted up my Lizzies!

Playing
This year, in half a year I have managed to play as many games as I did all of last year!  Plus, i have the beginning of a variety of games.  I just need to finish them off on the table.

  1. Broken Legions- Played
  2. Wars of the Republic!- Played a couple of times
  3. Men of Bronze- Played it!
  4. Operation: Hemlock- Got those in too!
  5. Play a New Game- Watch this space for the battle report!
Broken Legions

Wars of the Republic

Men of Bronze

Aeronautica Imperialis

Wars of the Republic

Wars of the Republic

Rampant Stars

Turf War

Aquanuatica Imperialis

Rules Writing
Typically, this is one of my more productive goals for the year.  Last year was a pretty good year for me on this front, and I hope to keep expanding on my successes.  I always have various projects on the go, and this year I have a few deadlines to hit!

1.       Complete writing Wars of the Republic for Osprey Games- Sent to the Publisher!

2.       Update the photos and artwork in Turf War for Wargame Vault- I have the models and terrain now.  Just need to take the photos and make the updates!

3.       Get 1 game from the WIP section to the Wargame Vault- I finished the rules for Glittering Void, but I really need some better pictures before that is ready for prime time.

4.       Get 1 new game into the WIP section of the blog- I actually have 4 games I have been working on: Under the Martian Yoke, White Star/Red Star, Homer's Heroes, and Aquanautica Imperialis: Force of Arms.  Two are up in the WIP Games section for you to review.

White Star/Red Star Playtest

Miscellany
This is stuff I want to do for the Blood and Spectacles publishing, but don’t really fall into other categories.

1.       Get 1 new blog post a week- So far I am on track!

2.       Take more photos for Social Media Marketing- Check my Instagram!

3.       Add a games Played/Models Painted Tracker to the Blog- In web version, look at the bottom right hand side, below the WIP games!
4.       Do preliminary work for organizing a local Convention for 2021- Covid absolutely killed this one!  No  progress.

Conclusion
There is an update.  Like usual, it has been a productive year writing games but it has also been unusually productive with gaming and painting too.  I have a strong start to 2020, but I expect the Apocalypse to arrive and ruin the second half from a wargaming perspective.  I mean, it is an election year!  I hope my progress so far is enough to carry me through the end of the year.

Good luck to all of you out there!
