RPG Review: Inspirisles - Hatchling Games

 


This was a game I picked up for my wife for Christmas.  She has been looking for a game she can GM for her first time GMing.  Therefore, she wanted something that was less complex than the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic game.  This one appealed to her for two main reasons:

  • It is designed for younger players and is family-friendly
  • It features American Sign Language (ASL) in the mechanics
She learned ASL in college, was a big part of the deaf community in our area and even has a Facebook group dedicated to ASL in our area.  She was very close to being an interpreter before deciding to go a different route.  

Therefore, this game seemed like it would be a good fit for her needs.  We picked up the core rulebook, the Underisles expansion, and set of adventures she could start us off with.

Today, I will be looking at the core rulebook.  Let's get ready to shape and sign! 


Things I Liked

A core idea that powers the game is a mechanic called Belief/Disbelief.  Since the setting is focused on Fae and magic, this was a clever idea to focus on.  The players are in an alternate, magical realm that is shaped and powered by Belief.  Disbelief is destructive energy that brings ruin and wrath to the magical lands of the game. Disbelief is negative emotions like Cruelty, Corruption, Greed, and Bloodlust.  Belief is a form of magical currency that powers the world and the PCs powers.   

The game is very clear that its intention is to do three things: 

  1. Story-telling
  2. Empathy and Collaboration
  3. Deaf Awareness
It is always nice for a game to be upfront about it's design goals. 

Sign Language is built mechanically into the game as an effect called Shaping.  They have resources for both American and British Sign Language as they are different.  They even have video tutorials on their site as well, so you can see the signs being made as well.  Using certain signs in certain ways will give you modifiers and re-rolls to various rolls.    

The section about Shaping is a very good introduction to the Deaf community.  For example, it is rude to assume a Deaf person would like a cure for deafness.  Many see it as their own culture and embrace it.  The sections about sentence structure are spot-on, as ASL uses a Yoda-like sentence structure of Time, Topic, and Comment.  The rulebook really mostly covers how to Finger-sign, numbers, basic question words, and a few RPG specific words too.  You could play the game without signing at all if you really wanted to, but that feels like missing the point. 

Character Generation is very easy and has no numbers.  It is all narrative, but asks questions that draw upon the world of the game to help you fit into a place.  In addition, you choose an element as that ties into what you can do with your "shaping".  You also build a sanctuary and narrate 5 items that align with your sanctuary and hobby.  Later you will use Belief to increase these items, your sanctuary, and even your PCs skill level. 

Mechanics and resolution only require 3 regular six-sided dice.    



The GM section does a good job of laying out how the game should be played.  It is broken down into a "Questing Day" that will have a variety of challenge archetypes.  The Questing Day is essentially the session for a night of play.  The archetypes are basically scenes with potential resolution styles.  All Questing Days end in safety and a chance to reflect and for the GM to gather feedback.  A whole chapter is an example Questing Day for a level 1 party using various archetypes.         



Things I Did Not Like

Some of the naming conventions for things I was not a huge fan of.  The background of the game is Celtic and British folklore so it draws heavily from these sources.  For example, the GM is called a Grail Guide.  Player-Characters are called Pendragons.  They use names and terms from Arthurian myth outside of that context and as a fan of Chaosium's Pendragon this caused me a bit of angst and confusion.  The lore in this game is unique to itself.   

There are two types of tests in this game, Belief Barriers and Disbelief Battles.  The first are challenge tests and the second are contested tests.  For any test, the Players choose who will lead based on element and they roll the dice.  Up to two other players can choose how they assist and give a bonus to the dice roller.  To encourage narrative, you only earn belief from shaping and using narrative actions, a simple dice roll may pass but will generate no Belief.  3-4 is a fail, and you gain Disbelief!  10+ is a pass, and 17-18 is Crit which generates additional belief.  Disbelief Battles only force opponents to flee or surrender since Bloodshed caused Disbelief.  These work as Belief Barriers except the total of any dice roll is compared.  The higher dice roll wins.    

These are very simple dice mechanics and lead to no real depths or even much decision making.  The biggest issue is determining the Leaders and how exactly the supporting PCs will do that.  Most of the decision making is how the elements will narratively work.  Therefore, there is little or no tactical depth or thinking to these tests beyond a bit of creativity.  To make them a bit more interesting, the GM can require multiple dice tests so the challenge lasts more than a single round.  

There is a small twist about which elements are dominant over other elements.  Offensive elements like Air and Fire force the opponent to re-roll dice in a Disbelief Battle.  Meanwhile, Earth and Water allow you to re-roll your own dice.  However, if you are facing an element that "Dominates" your own, then all re-rolls are cancelled.  For example, a Water element can cancel the re-rolls ability of a Fire element.  Therefore, picking the right leader does make a difference.   

You will notice that the ASL part is not integrated fully into the mechanics for overcoming challenges.  There is no place where the leader or the assisting players need to use ASL?  It is not clear what role ASL plays with shaping or the resolution mechanics in this game.  It is also not clear to me how ASL is needed to interact in this world either?  This is a BIG miss and almost betrays the Hook that got me to purchase these rules in the first place. 

These challenge types are more like simple narrative beats rather than complex puzzles or challenges of their own.  However, for a simple family-friendly RPG this can work just fine.  The impact of these challenges rests much more on the sill of the GM to make them exciting and how engaged he can make the players with them. This section does have several examples on how the process works and how to narrate them for both GMs and Players. 

This game has a self-contained focus of gathering the parts of Excalibur.  Some of the mechanics seem tied to this quest.  However, at no point does the game really tell you what steps this quest should take.  That is left up to the GM and the Players. 


Meh and Other Uncertainties

Since this game was designed to be played by young adults, learners, and be family-friendly they spilled a decent amount of ink on safety tools, consent tools, and how to play RPGs in a respectful manner.  The free-form nature of RPGs was not an excuse to live out your inner edgelord fantasy but to learn how to be part of something greater than yourself and a larger community.  I especially liked one of the blurbs that said, "Life is full of ups and downs, so use our game to experience disappointment in a safe space" 

The game provides a special tool called a "Grail Tool" that acts like a safety card.  Players can use it to show their discomfort in a scene or with a situation.  You can flip it from Red to Green, or lift it up depending on how series the situation is.  I have seen discussion of such tools in other rulebooks, but mostly as an aside.  Here since the audience is younger and the game is focused on education, the use of the safety tools is much more defined and explicit process.  I have only read about such tools so it was nice to see how the game implemented them.  

The Appendix has a consent document to help the GM know what is an is not triggering or wanted from the players.  This includes topics like blood, harm to children, animals, etc.  Creatures or scenarios that are off-limits like severe weather, illness, claustrophobia, etc.  Finally, it clears the air on romance within your games.  Again, since the game is for new RPG-players and younger folks this level of detail makes some sense to me.  However, I have never gone through such an explicit process in Session Zero, so this was something new to me.    

Since the game is focused on cooperation and empathy, NPCs are called "Friends".  These are fae and magical creatures in the Inspirisles often taken from Celtic and European folklore.  

It is important to note, that this game has no death.  Injury is also not a focus.  Instead the focus is on failure and the collection of Disbelief.  Disbelief builds up on a Calamity Meter.  This creates new threats that will distract the PCs from their goals and objectives.  The game provides gathering the 6-piees of Excalibur together as their main goal.  However, the Calamity Meter will give them distractiosn from this effort, and the only way to reduce the Calamity Meter is by finding pieces of the sword.  Of course, you can also use Belief to buy down the Calamity Meter as well.  

The last chapter breaks down the "Inspirisles", which races and people live where, key locations, etc.  This includes some adventure hooks, some foes, and a few other bits and pieces.  


Final Thoughts

Going into this game was an interesting experience because it had two main goals; be fun and educate.  That is a distinct difference from most of the other games I have reviewed on this site, as most of them are focused on just being fun.  Therefore, I had to look at this game from a slightly different lens and think about whether it accomplished both tasks.  I have an interest in using games as a tool to train and educate in the corporate world, so seeing how they tried to tackle this dual purpose was eye-opening to me.  

The rules are simple, but playable.  In some ways, it uses a lot of ideas as a game like Avatar: Legends using elements and shaping as a focus of gameplay.  It also focuses a lot on leaning into the Narrative too.  However, I think it is a lesser product overall.

Ultimately, the ASL portion of the game was interesting BUT I think it is overstated as a hook in this game.  It is not integrated seamlessly into the mechanics, in fact; the designers even say that they purposely made it playable without using Sign Language!  To me that is burying the lede.  What they tell you about Sign Language and Deaf-Culture is solid, but it is not well represented in the game itself.  It would require some work on the GMs part to make ASL integral to the game.  It almost felt like it was added after the fact and I was disappointed.  

So, do I think they hit their design goals of Story-telling, Empathy, and Deaf Culture?  Maybe, but I think they did not lean into their goals hard enough.  Still, I learned things from reading it.  I am interested to see if my wife decides to try to run it with my group.

Heroquest: Rise of the Dread Moon- Hasbro/Avalon Hill

 


I have been slowly buying up Heroquest expansions, reviewing them, painting them up, and then moving onto the next.  In late 2025, I disrupted this approach and decided to just go ahead and get a whole bunch of the expansions all at once, mostly so I could round out my collection of heroes. That means, I have several expansions that are sitting and waiting for me to review and paint this year.  At the time of writing, the only one I do not have is the Wizards of Morcar.  That means there is a lot more Heroquest content coming up in 2026.  This may please or annoy you, but my backlog is my backlog!  

That brings us to today's entry.  Rise of the Dread Moon is one of the first expansions that is all new content.  It is no longer the only new content, but this one kicked it off.  Therefore, it is intentionally designed to build from the OG campaign in the core rulebook.  So, let's grab our Potions of Healing, hoist our shields, sharpen our weapons, and prepare our spells.  Time to go a Reviewing......


Things I Like

This is a big expansion with a lot of cards, miniatures, and cardboard.  Plus, it has a new set of quests and monsters too.  This is a chunky boy! 

I am very happy to add the Knight to our group of heroes.  He seems a natural fit into a fantasy game, and indeed Knights are referenced at the end of Kellar's Keep.  Therefore, it makes sense that they would become more involved as a hero after the O.G. Quests.  This guy's main thing is defense in the way that the Barbarian is offense.  He has the highest starting defense score of all the heroes. In addition, he has three cards of special rules that emphasize helping others and defense.  I got mine all painted up at the end of 2025.....


I like the addition of a few new enemies.  The first is an Elven Archer.  This adds some more ranged combat foes which is an interesting challenge for heroes compared to the usual melee foes.  The second is Ethereal monsters that can move through walls and can pop-up and attack.  Plus, they are hard to kill as they are not hit with a Skull, but a Black Shield!  Finally, Cultists have some interesting abilities to cast Dread Spells that work better the more of them there are.  Good new challenges that are not just harder stat blocks for the heroes to face off against.        

Not every quest in this booklet assumes that you leave to town in-between quests.  They are linked together.  This is not the first time they have used this idea, but in other expansions you could still go shopping and heal up.  Not so in Rise of the Dread Moon.  Instead, they provided something called a Hide-out that is an alchemy table, some gear, and a chance to randomly heal up.  This is a good mechanic to make resource attrition much more of an issue and increase the threat of the quests but still allow for updates in game.   


Things I Do Not Like

This expansion really hinders Mind Points as an alternate way to attack Heroes.  It is very clear that if Mind Points go to zero, the Hero does not die.  Instead, they become "shocked" which reduces them to 1 red die, 1 attack dice, and 2 defense dice.  Incidentally, unarmed Heroes also have 1 attack dice and 2 defense dice too.  This muddies the water from previous expansions and as a Zargon, you will want to be clear how you plan on dealing with Mind Points in any given session or campaign.  I could see different expansions using different rules in this area. 

The Alchemy Deck is a cool and great idea.  However, it seems to only apply to this expansion?  It is unclear how this will work in say.... Jungles of Delthrak or Against the Ogre Horde.  Are we supposed to assume that all special rules in an expansion only apply to that expansion or across the board, or only going forward in the "timeline"?  Again, Zargon will need to decide how he wants to approach this.    

This really needed a Sir Ragnar miniature.  He is a key NPC in this booklet, and they do not have a unique miniature for him.  This is something that Hasbro/Avalon Hill have been very inconsistent on.  In some expansions, they offer unique villain miniatures and in others they do not.  For example, in Return of the Witch Lord there is no Witch Lord.  However, in Mage in the Mirror they have an awesome evil Queen mini.  I honestly think they should make a "Named NPC" expansion with minis and cards for each of the big bads they have.  



Meh and Other Uncertainties

There are other new rules for smoke bombs, caltrops, and unknown mercenaries.  I am rather ambivalent about these.  I love the Mercs miniatures, BUT the concept of Mercs I am more torn on.  It is basically a indication that the Quest are much harder and they are having a tough time keeping difficulty up but still balancing the game.  

Also, connected specifically to the Quests are Disguises, Strangers, and Reputation.  Again, it does not seem like these apply to Heroquest games in general and only apply to this specific expansion and set of quests.  I think they are interesting concepts and new things you can add into your own Quests.    

This Quest clearly works best after you have played the OG Quests, Mage in the Mirror, and now this one.  That means your Heroes might be pretty buff at this point.  This is not an easy campaign and it ties in closely with the stories from those previous quests. However, in this one the Heroes are not welcome visitors and instead must infiltrate the city.  This concept is cool, but it is a bit odd as they did help the Queen in earlier adventures.  Therefore, the Elven guards you kill?  Best not to swell on it friend, but the blurb in the back assures us they were corrupted by Zargon's power.    

The first quest makes us of some water rules.  This is not the first supplement with water, but this one focuses on waterways moving to drains.  I think these waterway rules are more like wading through a sewer rather than swimming or underwater details.  I like them better than some of the rules in Spirit Queen's Torment.  

Final Thoughts

This is a lot.  This is an expansion for a successful party of Heroes.  It turns some of the dynamics of the game on its head with the disguises, strangers, reputation, and the whole concept of the Quests.  This leans into the idea that the Heroes are not truly agents of the state, and much more "black ops" than we have seen,  These guys are Mentor's hired guns and the campaign highlights it.

This expansion adds a lot of ideas and stuff.  It is not entirely clear how these updates should apply in other expansions, BUT they are great tools for Zargons to put in their tool box for their own homebrews.  There are also a lot of new cards and miniatures too.  Overall, there is a lot of value in this box even though it is one of the thicker and more expensive expansions.

Battle Report: Castles in the Sky: Mirror Match

 


It is winter time here, and that is not a great time to be outside in my area.  However, it is a good time to be indoors playing miniature wargames!  Today I was teaching someone how to play Castles in the Sky.  Therefore, we used a simple Mirror Match between my Austro-Hungarian force and the Royal Navy.  This would give them a good feel for how the game was played.

Forces:

Dual Monarchy

Tegethoff Class- Com 3

Zenta Class- Com 3

Huszar- Com 2

Royal Navy

Queen Elizabeth Class- Com 3

Warrior Class - Com 3

Bullfunch class - Com 3

I didn't even bother giving the ships names or Captain names today, just went by the class to make it easier for them to find it in the book.  

Mission

A simple Patrol mission.  We would use Armor Loss to determine the winner.  The Fleet that lost more Armor would be the loser.   

Set-up:

We played on a 36MU by 36 MU board.  1MU was 1 inch.  For terrain we had three random cloud banks at altitudes 1, 2, and 5 respectively.  I used my ocean mat because it is easy to transport and looks good.  

The two fleets were on a crossing pattern both coming from the North side.  The Brits were up high and mid speed, with the A-H at Mid-speed and mid-altitude.    


Maneuver

As is normal for new players, they turned their Destroyer and came straight at me as fast as they could get it to go.  The British try to turn into Melee up close, while the Dual Monarchy try to lure them away with their cruiser, but it fails to draw them out.  Air torpedo attacks prove ineffective from long-range.


Battle

The British fleet closes the gap fast.  They tank heavy fire from the Tegethoff and the Queen Elizabeth bears down on her prey.  Her forward guns spew fire thanks to a good command roll that let's them go first, and a poor one from the Dual Monarchy deprives them of any Orders.  The Tegethoff is damaged in the exchange.  


The next round, the Tegethoff tries to duck under the guns, but it is not enough.  A full Fire for Effect Broadside plows into her stern, but the Austro-Hungarian captain used a Brace Order to avoid the worst of it.   However, the trailing Destroyer also manages to sink a hit into the Tegethoff.  

There is a very close range gun duel between the Warrior and the Zenta and Huszar.  The British cruiser takes the worst of it, taking a real hit.   

Both the Tegethoff and the Warrior explode!  They are packed in close to the enemy ships.  The Zenta and the Huszar manage to weather the explosions without damage, only Friction.  

End Phase

The Zenta moves to evade the British.  However, the Bullfinch is all over him.  The Huszar moves to protect their cruiser.  However, a torpedo still gets through and hits the Zenta for 1 damage and jamming her rudder.  

With that, we called it a game.

Conclusion:

British Victory!  10 AV to 8 AV

Well, the Queen Elizabeth came out the better Battleship this round.  That +5 at close range for Power.... yikes.  However, I made the mistake of trying to go toe-to-toe with it.  Once I was in the kill zone, realized the mistake; I could not get out of it in a timely way.  

Secondly, usually when someone sends their Destroyer way out ahead I easily focus fire on it and kill it.  I was not able to do that this time because it got behind me and I had to keep my guns focused elsewhere.  Normally, the Destroyer charge never works, but this time it did!  It was a thorn in my back all game.  

I only managed as well as I did because of a lucky strike from my Zenta.  That was a desperation move to bracket the Warrior with Cruiser and the Escort that could have easily backfired on me.  I know from experience that the Warrior can dish out a lot of pain on an enemy Cruiser.  

A relatively quick, fun game as I tried to get some new blood into the game.  With chit-chat, set-up, and take down this one lasted about two hours.  Enough time to drink a warm cup of tea, too.    

The biggest problem is the difficulty of getting models here in the states.  It can be a chore to track down a US distributor with stock.  I usually use Scale Creep Miniatures and have had good success.  There are not even a ton of 3D print options out there either.  The best bet is probably to use Dystopian Wars models or scratchbuilds.  This issue is also slowing down my development of the follow-on game; Mobile Fortress: Verdun.

Heroquest: The Meathead Party - The Border Fort of In-Gulden

 


For a lark, I wanted to do something a bit different for Heroquest. By tradition, it is designed to be played with a Barbarian, Dwarf, Wizard, and Elf.  The Wizard and Elf and a bit more fragile but bring a bit of utility magic and healing, the Dwarf takes care of traps and tanks, and the Barbarian brings Body points and damage output.  The four work together to make a well-balanced team.  

With the release of several expansions, there were a number of new Heroes you can take for your Heroquest adventures.  Conveniently, I have them all and even painted them all up.  That means, instead of the O.G. 4, I can take a mix of new Heroes.  

I have been running with Heroes Reborn for a few quests now.  They are a Wizard, a Dwarf, a Monk, and a Druid.  The Wizard and the Dwarf we know their roles.  The Druid brings magical support and healing, plus the Beast Form spell.  However, they are pretty squishy and not much of a fighter.  The Monk on the other hand is a great tank and damage dealer for low Body monsters thanks to her elemental powers.  This again leads to a rather balanced party.  

I will continue my more "serious" questing with Hope Reborn.  However, First Light seems to suggest that Mentor has not put all his eggs into one Heroic basket.  It seems to imply that Mentor is running more than one heroic band at once!  This gives me a chance to run a "less serious" group through the First Light scenario packs and see what happens.  

For this group, I am not going to balance it at all!  Instead, I want to go no magic and all Meatheads!  I am interested to see how they do with no access to healing.  Will they all die Quest 1 or will they soldier on all the way through?   

The Meatheads

This secondary adventuring band will be led by Sir Tryard.  A loyal knight of the Crown and a former squire of Sir Ragnar.  Sir Tryard has never much cared for magic and the threat of Dread that comes with it.  When asked by Mentor to lead a band of heroes, his one stipulation was that there would be none of the sorcerous ilk.    

My secondary group will be joined by the barbarian, Sonjah.  Hailing from the Northern Tribe oft called the Aetherkin.  She has come down from the mountains to answer Mentor's summons for aid.  She won the honor after a series of trials set forth by her people..... or so she claims.  No one wants to challenge her telling of events.     

Accompanying her is the strong and mostly silent Rageina the Berserker.  She seems to accompany Sonjah out of a sense of purpose.  Sonjah does not speak of how the two crossed paths.  Perhaps their meeting is the true reason they have answered Mentor's summons?  Sir Tryard had no interest in courtly gossip on the subject and is glad to have them join.  

Finally, they are also joined by the Dwarf Noble, Autius Argead.  Hailing from a rival family line to the Magonids, Autius has joined Mentor's adventuring party to prove the superiority of the Argeads to the Magonids.  Perhaps one day, the Argeads will supplant the Magonids as the heirs of the Dwarven Throne?  Until that day, Autius has come forth to stop the forces of Zargon and aid the King of Men.

Sir Ragnar's Spies

Sir Ragnar comes to Mentor looking for aid.  His scouts have failed to return from the Border Fort of In-Gulden.  He fears the worst but is unable to sally forth himself to investigate.  With Mentor's promise of aid he turns to his latest assets to assist the Kingdom.  

Sir Tryard is happy to assist Sir Ragnar.  Perhaps he can show his mettle to his former master?  With that, he calls together his team and gives them a briefing.  They gather their weapons and head out on the long trail from Mentor's tower to the Border of the Kingdom.

After a few days, the Border Fort of In-Gulden comes into view, strategically situated on a cliff side overlooking a winding road into untamed lands.  The banner of the King is no longer visible along the battlements.  The Meatheads exchange glances and fear the worst.

"Be Cautious," Sir Tryard intones.  Before leaving, in a private counsel Sir Ragnar gifted Sir Tryard with two potions of healing to help on this mission.  Tryard hands a Healing Potion to Autius and keeps one for himself.  He slams his helmet closed and takes up his sword, gesturing for the rest to follow him in.   

The Border Fort of In-Gulden

Sir Tryard is confident of his knowledge of these types of Border Forts.  This is not the first one he has been in.  His early days squiring were in just such a fort.  He leads the way in, and quickly finds and slays a goblin guard.  Sonjah goes down the opposite corridor and deals with a sentry there, while the others scramble in behind.  

However, Sir Tryard's confidence is quickly shaken with a mighty rubble and a wall of dust as the ceiling comes crashing down.  Rageina barely made it through in time!  Sonjah grabs her friend's hand and pulls her up.  Her ice blue eyes stare daggers into the Knight.  The entry was blocked.  A neat trick, and something the forces of Zargon had added.  

"I doubt that is the only trap Zargon's troops have added.  Be mindful," the knight intones. 


The group goes through a doorway and is soon greeted by more enemy foes.  They were moving to investigate, and when the Meat Heads opened the door caught them by surprise.  Sonjah rushed in, eager to finish them off quickly but found herself falling victim to a falling rock trap!  She failed to take Sir Tryard's advise.  However, the group quickly dispatched the foes.  

However, it was too late.  Sir Ragnar's scout was dead.  The barbarian rummaged through the body and found a note, that she handed over to Sir Tryard, "Your chief will want that."  

Autius points to the door, indicating more activity on the other side.  They are eager for battle... to eager as another falling rock trap hits Sonjah.  Orcs and Goblins leap at the intruders but are quickly cut down by the heroes flashing blades.  The Meat Heads take a moment to rest at the hearth and catch their breath. Autius said, "This place has more traps than a ratcatcher's convention."  

The group continued, and this time Rageina opened a door a triggered an alarm.  Orc guards came rushing from across the fort to deal with the intruders.  Sir Tryard and Autius moved to cut them off, while Rageina and Sonjah dealt with the greenskins in front of them.  


The danger is quickly dealt with, but their presence in the fort was now known.  They had to move quickly, and the group tried to pick-up its pace.  Stealth was mostly abandoned now as they rushed to find the scouts.  A scream heralded their approach and they opened a door just in time to see a scout slump to the floor at the clawed hands of a pair of abominations.  

Sir Tryard moved quickly to the next room to try and rescue any remaining scouts.  Behind him Sonjah and Autius fought a desperate battle with the onrushing abominations.  The knight flung open the next door, to see he was again too late!  The scout was on the floor, dead.  Looming over him was a warrior in massive red armor, a huge, bloody halberd in his hand, "I am Shal-da, warrior of Queen Kassandria.  I challenge you knight!"  The word "knight" came out as a hiss.  Sir Tryard did not even notice the orc warriors with his challenger.  

"I accept you challenge." With that the two engaged in a furious fight at the threshold as the Orcs jeered the Hero and cheered on their champion.  


It was an epic duel as the Dread Warrior was a skilled opponent.  He had earned his place by his Queen's side.  He battered and pummeled Sir Tryard, using his longer reach to push the knight out of the doorway.  Sir Tryard was injured and being pushed back.  However, he heard the war-shout of Sonjah!  The barbarian cared not for honor, duels, and challenges.  The point of fighting was to win.  She rushed the Dread Warrior from behind, and her broadsword found a weak spot in his red armor.  Her blade sunk home, as the Warrior's mighty Halberd clattered to the ground.

"Is this what your King calls honor?" Shal-Da gurgled before slumping to the ground.  Sir Tryard did not have time to think about the finer points of chivalric combat as the Orcs stormed out and attacked as well.  Autius and Sonjah jumped in to hold back the tide with Rageina following up.  There was one Scout potentially left alive and Sir Tryard intended to find them.  

As Sir Tryard rushed ahead Rageina and Autius confirmed that the two scouts they had found were dead.  In the process, Autius found a secret door that led into a secret tomb.  He was accosted by skeleton guards, and a shout for aid brought Sonjah.  Together they cleared the crypt.  Sonjah easily opened the sarcophagus and was pleased to see the glint of gold inside!  


Rageina also found important information in the room of her fallen scout.  She took the paper with the Kingdom's strange writing on it.  Sire Tryard would want to see that.  Plus, inside a chest she also found a pile of plunder!  Her search revealed a secret door, and on the other side was a secret stairway.  

During this search, Autius was ambushed by a goblin who was hiding in a cupboard.  The critter charged at him with a terrified hiss!  He was to startled and out of position to respond and it gave him a serious wound.  However, Rageina stepped in and finished it with mighty swing.  

"Nothing worse than closet goblins," she mumbled. 


Tryard broke into another room, and his shouts of alarm brought Rageina running to his aid.  They quickly dispatched the Orc and Goblin guards.  The rest of the group came up as they burst into what Sir Tryard was positive was the last guard house to be cleared.  Again, they were too late.  The scout had been killed by Zargon's allies.  He rushed in to do battle, along with Sonjah.  However, she fell into a pit.  Despite the challenges the battle was short lived.  

With the last scout's fate secured, Sir Tryard took a moment to assess the situation.  His party was bruised and bleeding.  However, they were still trapped in the fort.  With this moment of respite, Rageina gave him the note from the desk; important intel for Sir Ragnar.  She also said, "I found a way out." 

"By all means, show us the way m'lady." 

The Berserker wrinkled her nose at such words, but easily led the party to the secret stairway.  

Conclusion

Well, the Meathead Party managed to survive their foray into the border fort of In-Gulden.  They did take some bad injuries with Autius at 1, Sonjah at 2, Rageina at 3, and Sir Tryard at 3.  However, for not having any spell-casters they did okay.  I might have to try something like this again but with only the Warlock, Bard, Wizard, and Druid?  I doubt it would end as well.  

The group made a lot of money on this one, netting something like 555 gold, two Healing potions, and a Potion of Defense.  With all this loot, they should be able to arm up nicely for the next few adventures in First Light  Someone really needs a Battle Axe for this group. 

They did still tend to find traps the hard way, but Autius managed to disarm two or three during the adventure.  The Meatheads were just too eager to get into melee and ran into the traps head first.  However, the decision-making process for this band of Meatheads was a bit different than with a normal spread of heroes.  You knew that each of them could handle themselves on their own, so getting split up was easier.  Sadly, I did not even get to try to use any of the Knight or Berserkers special abilities out.   

The battle between the Knight and the Dread Warrior was pretty epic.  A duel that went several rounds as Sonjah and Autius were tied up with a pair of Abominations.  It was the highlight of the adventure for me.  Too bad that was somewhere in the mid-point of the mission rather than the end.     

I wonder what Hope Reborn is up to these days?  Maybe we will find out soon?

On The Painting Desk: Heroquest - A Whole Lot of Elves

 

I have a lot of Heroquest Elves to get painted.  I got the Mage in the Mirror and the Rise of the Dread Moon supplement and Elves were the primary baddies from those boxes.  I got most of the other stuff from Mage in the Mirror done, but left off the elves since I saw the Rise of the Dread Moon had so many.  If I did not paint them all at once, I had a feeling they would end up looking very different and not match each other that well.  Now was the time to get it done.  

First thing I did, was I reviewed how I painted my Elf heroes.  There were a few conventions I wanted to carry-over across all the elf minis.  Of course, I was going to use Elf Flesh from my Armypainter set as the basic flesh tone, I mean it is in the name right!?!  The main convention was that I did not use Metallic colors for their "metal" work, instead I used Pallid Bone to give them a goldish look to their gear.  This would make them distinctive from the other "Minions" that I painted.   Hair colors I had used actual Daemonic Yellow, Sand Golem, and Graveyard Grey so nothing too crazy there.  I decided that elves would NOT have any red-heads.  That was for the Fae Druids and Dwarves.  With those guidelines in place, it was time to get to work.  

The first step, was to go ahead and undercoat them all with Grey Seer, then the traditional cheap acyrilic dark grey wash, followed by the white drybrushing.  I also went ahead and painted up all the Elven Flesh in one big batch.  They were now ready to get painted.  You have all seen that a hundred times, so I didn't even bother with a picture!  

My eye was immediately drawn to the Elf Mercenaries from Rise of the Dread Moon.  These guys were not supposed to look like the "Minion" elves, so I decided to start on them first.  I was not ready to start batching yet.  They are four individual models, a guy with dual hand-axes (Striker), a guy with a pole-arm (Halberdier), a crossbow pistolier (Arbelist), and a crouching guy with a cloak (scout).  It was clear to me that although they were individual sculpts they should all look like they were on the same team.  Therefore, I decided to give them a unifying color-scheme.  

I decided that their under clothing would be Orc Green, and their cloaks would be Magic Blue.  I also applied the usual conventions for all elves of Pallid Bone armor and metals.  No Red-heads.  That made painting this little group up much easier and I ended up batch painting them as a group.  Once the base coats were dry, I hit them with a light tone wash and then based them like all my Heroquest with Runic Grey and a Black rim.  


I have not read the quest in Rise of the Dread Moon but I can not help but think these guys are a band of Elf heroes.  They could be taking on the dungeon that our Heroes took on early, but they were somehow seperated by Zargon's trickery.  The Heroes help them to become re-united and they come to their aid to defeat Zargon and their designs on the Elven Kingdom.  It is always dangerous to build too much head canon before you read the actual quest!  

From there, I moved onto the other Elves.  I had a lot of sword and boards and archers.  However, in order to feel like I was accomplishing stuff, I grabbed the Magus Guard and Assassins next to paint.  I also had the Elf Sorceress Queen to paint, but I decided to hold off on her until the end as a little treat.  I took a close look at the Elven Magus Guard and picked them up and put them down several times before I started working on them.  I wanted something almost crystalline look to their armor but was not sure I could pull it off.  

So instead, as I messed around thinking about the Magus Guard, I picked up the assassins and went to work.  These guys would be much more straight forward!  Any metal was going to be Pallid Bone and it looked like they just had some knee pads, some gauntlets, a breast plate, some shoulder pads, and their cool knife chain thing.  I decided to make their under clothing dark purple and their boots Graveyard Grey I wanted them dark but not black.  For their cloaks I gave one a Camo Cloak Green and the other a Highlord Blue.  For hair it was Zealot Yellow and Grim Black.  Then, it was the usual bases. 


I think they look suitably tough and scary.  They are pretty visually distinctive from the Mercs as well.  That left me going back to the Magus Guard.... again.  In my regular Armypainter Paints I pulled out Voidshield Blue, which is a relatively light baby blue.  Then, I watered it down and base coated their armor with it using "two, thin coats".  I hear that is all the rage.  Then, I went back and dry brushed it all with cheap acrylic white again, and I was pretty happy with how that turned out.  From there I added a bit of detail with some Runic Grey and Hardened Leather.  After that, I gave one a Blood Red plume and another the Alchemy Purple plume to give them some differentiation.  Finally, I went back and used Fire Giant Orange on their cloaks and the Phoenix on their shields.  Finally, I gave the armor a watered down Blue tone each, and the rest a light tone wash.  Then, the bases as usual.....


Okay, time was running out for this weeks effort but I had one last model I wanted to finish.  I had the BBEG from Mage in the Mirror to finish.  I wanted her to fit in with the Magus Guard, so used the same trick I did on their armor for her robe.  I also enjoyed using Alchemy Purple on the runes on her color and then painted over it with Zealot Yellow once it had dried.  That gave them an inset rune look.  I used Sand Golem on the wolf staff, and Pallid Bone on the other one.  Finally, the final touch was the Plasmatic Bolt hair.  I then gave her a light tone wash on everything except her robes.  Base was as normal, but her dress covered most of the base, which was cool!  


Not a bad start on the painting front for 2026!  I still have a lot of Heroquest Elves, but those are going to be more of a batch painting process.  I have something like 8 or so Sword Elves and 6 or so Archers.  Still plenty more elves to finish, and I have more miniatures than that waiting for me.  I have the Rise of Dread Moon furniture, and I still need to decided what I am going to do with the translucent miniatures for Heroquest from Spirit Queen's Torment and Prophecy of Telor.

Wargame Design: Understanding the Genre


A new year and a renewed commitment to making sure I talk about wargame design on this blog!  Sometimes, it can get lost in the painting, the game reports, the reviews, and all the RPG stuff I have been drawn to lately.  Hopefully, I can get wargame design on the blog at least once a month or every other month.  I have to admit that sometimes I am unsure what folks still want to see in this space.  I have covered so many of the basic topics from the 4Ms, to Chrome, to the process, and some pretty esoteric areas of wargame design.  Therefore, if there is something you want me to talk about drop me a comment!  It helps get my brain moving.  

Genre?  Is That Even a Word?

Let's start by setting some ground rules.  There is nothing new under the sun.  Innovation is Overrated.  Most games we go and see some bright spark is putting a label on it and creating some definitions around what it means.  Sometimes these labels become buzz words in and of themselves.  We have all heard them:  

  • Grimdark
  • Steampunk
  • Cozy 
  • Eurotrash
  • Noblebright
  • Spy-fi
  • High Fantasy
  • Kitchen Table
  • Hard Sci-Fi
Honestly, the list of genres grows so long that half the time when I run across the I have no idea what they mean anymore.  I guess I am getting too old to keep up with the industry and its genre buzzword.  Some of these terms are more common than others, and some stick better than others.    

However, a Genre is essential a category or class of games that all share certain distinct features that align them with games of a similar category.  These features maybe based on mechanics about how the game plays.  It might be based on aesthetics such as how the game looks.  It could also be featured around the narrative built into the game such as the setting or story beats.  

The key thing for you to know as a designer is that when your game gets one of these nice Genre labels, that means players start to have a certain expectation about what that means about the game.  They start to expect it to meet certain conventions and norms.  

These Genre terms are not unique to Wargaming.  In fact, many of these terms come from media like books, TV, and movies before they get applied to a wargaming setting.  That means they come with even more cultural baggage if it is a cross-media genre. 


The Mecha Genre

In wargaming, a common Genre was created by the game Battletech.  I am sure we are all familiar with it.  Giant robots that are piloted by humans that have big guns and big armor.  They stride across the battlefield and lay waste to lesser foes.  Only other big, giant, stompy robots can oppose them.  

This genre is not unique to wargaming.  It also exists within a larger media world.  Super Robots and and other big, stompy robots are a staple of Japanese (and other) media.  Think about Transformers, Robotech, Voltron, Gundam, and countless other examples of the big, stompy robot genre.  They are rather ubiquitous in popular culture and along with that notoriety, the average person has certain assumption about what it means to be part of the Mecha genre.  

Battletech was "first to market" in the wargaming space and hence has set many of the conventions people associate with big, stompy robot games.  They have come to expect the following: 

  • Resource management such as Heat or Energy
  • The ability to take a lot of damage in attritional combat and limb loss
  • Walking and jumping, but mostly terrestrial combat
  • The Big, Stompy Robots are kings of the battlefield
  • Pilot skills are important to combat results
There are others, but those are the key ones I can think of off the top of my head.  These first-to-market features have helped define what the genre of Mecha Games should mean.  Some of these ideas also appear in other media, but not all.    

Now, since Battletech has come out the number of games related to Mecha have expanded.  There are a number of big, stompy robot games on the market.  You will also find that many of them still harken back to those same key points in their designs and features.  People who buy Big, Stompy Robot games expect them. 


Why The Genre Matter

Now that you understand how the idea of Genre works, it is obvious that those Genre labels create certain expectations.  As a designer these expectations can be your friend or your foe.  However, as the designer it is important that you have an understanding of the Genre rules and conventions.  

The great thing about Genres is that they help you establish the guidelines and design goals for your game.  You know what players are expecting, and you know that you will want to deliver those basic assumptions about the genre.  So, if you are designing a Mecha game you want some resource management, attritional combat elements, land combat, with pilot skill built into the mechanics.  Therefore, your design goals can quickly and easily hit the key Genre requirements early.  

The downside about Genre is that they also establish certain expectations from the player, and if you did not hit them; the players may reject your game without giving it much time, space, or effort.  When the expectations of the Genre are not met, it may lead to dissatisfaction with the whole product.  Player expectation is a powerful motivator.  These expectations can serve to "hem in" your design space.

Therefore, once you have a Concept for a game, it is a good idea to go do your homework.  You will want to know what Genre it fits into.  From there, you will want to understand the core expectations of players and see if you have a different or skewed Point-of-View (POV) on the topic.  Unless you bring a new POV, mechanical beat, narrative beats, or even a visual Hook you will want to ask yourself what new thing are you bringing to the design space.  No one needs another Warhammer (Insert any other popular Genre game here).   


Deconstructing the Genre

You have done your homework and seen how everyone else has done it.  You have an understanding of what the Customers expect from the Genre.  You know the key points of what makes the Genre the Genre.  Now you know the rules and tropes of the Genre.  Now, you have what you need to break the rules!  You can not break the rules unless you know what you are breaking!  

No one needs another Battletech, it exists and can be played now.  Steve Jobs famously said, "If I built what customers wanted, they would just have gotten another CD player.  Instead, I built what they did not know they needed!  I built the I-pod" .... or something like that.  You do not need to try to build a better Battletech, heck even the makers of Battletech have struggled doing that.  Instead, you have to build something that the players may not even know they needed!  

However, doing this is a delicate balance.  People want innovation, but can only handle it in small doses.  They want the familiar.  In the I-pods case it was still a portable music player that used head phones, essentially a CD Player without having to change CDs.  It still met their needs of playing music portably and personally, but better because you had access to more music!  

You need to do the same thing with your Genre.  You need to deliver the familiar, but more.  The easiest way to do this is with a strong Hook .  A great way to develop a strong Hook is to take the "rules" of the Genre and decide to subvert or break one of them.  Still deliver on the core Genre premises and tropes, but completely subvert one.  

If we continue the Battletech example, I looked at the Mecha Game Genre and thought, "What if we set it in space?"  Now, there is plenty of source material from other media in the Genre that places mecha combat in space.  Battletech just isn't one of them, and most of the Genre doesn't either.  One of the tropes of the Mecha Game is that it is on land.  Immediately, you have given yourself a differentiator from all the other games in the Genre, you have subverted the Genre without destroying the underlying aspects of the Genre.  Hostile Space was born.  

Another example is Castles in the Sky Most Aeronef games were basically WWII naval, but supposedly flying.  They used 2D battlefield mechanics for ease of play.  I simply asked, "What if we added flying mechanics common to other aircraft games and made it 3D?"  Boom, I subverted the genre just enough to make something different.  



Conclusion

Genre is an amazing thing for a wargame.  It is important for designers to know and understand the genre they are trying to achieve and build for.  This involves doing the homework on what the "rules" of the genre are to start with.  Once you  know that, you will know what rules you can break.  It is important to break enough to create something new, but if you break too many; customers will reject it as "not part of the genre".  You have to keep your design space narrow enough to meet the needs of the Genre but break the right rule to make it something new and worth buying.  Therefore, knowing and understanding Genre is a blessing and a curse.
