For example, in Blackpowder, you make orders and roll for them to take effect. The mor eyou make the harder it gets. Once an order is failed your opponent can then start giving orders. Blood Bowl is another classic example, you get to do stuff until you fail a test, then your opponent takes over. Every action or order you make, you are "pushing your luck" to see if it can be accomplished.
